Theology of Paul Tillich

There are many theologians and types of theology. The foundation of Renovatio Institute is built upon the theology of Paul Tillich a 20th century theologian. Tillich's purpose, and a purpose he believed was justified, was to present a model and a structure of a theological system written from an apologetic point of view that carried through in a continuous correlation with philosophy. Tillich created common ground so that questions could be asked between the world of philosophy, which deals with the structure of being itself, and theology, which deals with the meaning of being for us. He attempted to create a theological method in which message and situation are related in such a way that neither of them is obliterated so that the two centuries old question of "Christianity and the modern mind" could be attacked more successfully. His system is an attempt to use the "method of correlation" as a way of uniting the message and situation. It correlates questions and answers, situation and message, human existence and divine manifestation . His aim is to bridge secular humanistic psychological thought with an apologetic, existential theology defining how the Christian message does answer the questions we ask about our existence, our salvation and destiny. Tillich believe it would be a positive judgment if the theologians of the coming generations acknowledge that his theology has helped them, and non-theological thinkers as well, to understand the Christian message as the answer to the questions implied in their own and in every human situation. Tillich's theology provides a conceptual framework that can be used to define the difference between our present self-centered states and the peaceful, empowering and transforming ecstasy of the Spiritual Presence.
